Hello, all!
As we close out week 3 of the school year with our 7th graders, we wanted to give a couple tid bits of info, along with course updates for each of the Team Legacy core classes.
Lockers:
If your learner is needing to have an assigned locker to store their materials, the main office has locks available for them to "rent" during the school year.
Charging iPads:
Our team is working towards ensuring that all students are coming to school and our classrooms "ready to learn." If your family is not able to support having your learner(s) charge their iPad each night, please let us know so we can remind them to leave their device in our team's charging cart overnight. We do track data in our system to note if patterns arise. Our team will communicate as we see trends arise, but CCR grades (responsibility) are at risk as we continue to navigate 1st quarter.
ELA:
Learners are beginning their first full unit for Language Arts. This unit will last the rest of the quarter with the Why folder due Friday. The Why folder will introduce the topic of 9/11 and informative writing. We will be reading the book Ground Zero which follows the stories of two kids, one that is enduring the attacks on 9/11 in New York City and one that is enduring the aftermath in present day Afghanistan.
Students will continue to follow our bell ringer schedule of: Monday – goal setting, Tuesday – library, Wednesday and Thursday – Quill, Friday – silent reading. I am hoping that we can get better about coming to class with a charged iPad every day. If I start to see a pattern of uncharged iPads with students, I will be adjusting responsibility grades.
Math:
Learners are working on finishing the Prelude (introductory) chapter this week and starting Chapter 1. The homework for this week is as follows:
Below is an overview of the topics covered in Chapter 1. There will be two quizzes for this unit, in addition to the unit test. Dates for these quizzes will be communicated to learners and posted on Schoology.
Science:
Students did a fantastic job navigating our first unit together and working through the conferencing process with myself and Savannah, our student teacher. Last week, students had the option of starting on the next unit, "Functions of Cells," while I was assisting in our CSSP classrooms. Below you will find our "unit guide" that students utilize as a resource to track each learning target, key questions, and correlating learning tasks. All learning materials are located on Schoology, along with checks students are asked to take as a means of tracking their level of mastery throughout the learning process. As overwhelming as this chart may seem at first glance, students have done amazing with tracking their progress and asking clarifying questions along the way! The due dates are listed below for the learning portions and show project for this unit:
LT #1 tasks & Check #1: Tuesday, September 10th
LT #2 tasks & Check #2: Friday, September 13th
LT #3 tasks & Check #3: Thursday, September 19th
Show project conference deadline: Friday, September 27th
Social Studies:
Students are wrapping up their conferences, showcasing their show projects on Early Native American Life before colonization.
Starting tomorrow, September 6th, we will begin our second lesson focusing on Christopher Columbus and the Columbian Exchange. Throughout this unit, students will research, collaborate, and create a series of trading cards showcasing influential historical figures and terms. These trading cards will include information on how these figures impacted the world then and now.
