Early-December Updates

The countdown to winter break is on!

This also means that the end of quarter 2 is looming in the distance - January 10th. We are being transparent with learners on learning expectations in the upcoming weeks to ensure they have every opportunity to complete coursework, ask any lingering clarification questions, and work towards any level 4 opportunities they may want to pursue. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like further information as a family to better support your learner!

ELA:
Students are currently working on their District Writing Sample. They will be given three days in class (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday) to read two articles on self-driving cars. Using evidence from these articles, students will answer the question: Should self-driving cars be purchased? They will be writing a 4 paragraph essay with an introduction paragraph, two body paragraphs that will use the claim, evidence, and reasoning format, and a conclusion paragraph. This essay will be used to determine how Heritage is doing with teaching writing and what I can review/reteach in quarter 3 when we begin writing 5 paragraph argumentative essays.

The Learn Folder for Unit 2 is due next Friday, December 20th. All learners should have their book completed by Thursday,  December 19th as well as their last book circle assignment. Please check in with your learner so that we can go into the break with no missing assignments!

Math:
Learners are working on finishing section 1 of Chapter 4, which is focused on completing a Proportions Web. This concept connects graphs, situations, tables, equations, and unit rates for proportional relationships and allows learners to see how they can go between the different representations.

The Section 1 quiz is on Thursday, 12/12. The Chapter 4 test is on Wednesday, 12/18.

The upcoming NDA+ Winter Interim Assessment is on December 19th. Learners NEED to come with a charged iPad for their class period on this day.

Science:
Learners are finalizing their work with our Genetics unit by completing their show project, which is more scripted in this unit and has the title "Monster Genetics." This project is included in their unit packet and learners should have this turned it into the clear bin by Friday, December 13th. I will be handing these back with feedback for any students not meeting the requirements for mastery of this standard for them to make corrections before resubmitting by Friday, December 20th. Conferencing with educators is unnecessary for this round of show projects, but I would like to meet with learners if they pursue a level 4 to communicate their findings.

The next unit - Environmental & Genetic Factors & Mutations - will kick off on Monday, December 16th. Due dates are TBD.

Social Studies:
This week, we are wrapping up our lesson on the Constitution! So far, students have looked at the Articles and Bill of Rights; they created a new classroom rule as well as ranked each amendment on a tier list! Up next, we are going to look at the Preamble. Here, learners will decide if the Constitution accomplishes its goals outlined in this introduction.

Finally, near the end of the week, learners will be completing a show project on all three sections of the Constitution. Their main job will be to explain each part, and aspects of them, and decide if the Constitution has been a success!
