Thank you so much to the lovely Team Legacy families that came for Student-Led Conferences! Reminder to those doing at-home conferences with their learner to please send their Hawk Time educator an email once they have successfully walked through their portfolio with you. We are so proud of the work that they have put in and hope that we can continue to hold the bar high for our learners!
Here are the course updates as we continue working through quarter 3:
ELA:
Students will be working through body paragraphs for argumentative essays. They will practice writing a body paragraph as a class, as well as two body paragraphs supporting the claim of their chosen practice topic. Topics include: Should video games be considered a sport?, Should plastic bottles or straws be banned?, Are zoos helpful or harmful to animals?, or Is binge-watching healthy? They will also begin working on writing and refuting counterclaims. Students will practice refuting using given topics and sentence starters. Practice counterclaim paragraphs will be written early next week.

Science:
Last Friday, students took their unit test for "Variation of Traits, Natural and Artificial Selection." The test was organized by each of the three learning targets, so students were able to gain feedback for each individually. The lowest score was put in as their overall test grade, which can be seen on PowerSchool. A test review was also handed out to all students as a mandatory assignment that was due on Friday, February 14th, prior to taking their test. Completion grades for this assignment were also put in on PowerSchool. Students have the option of retaking this test by learning target on Friday, February 21st, in science class. Mini-lessons will take place during Hawk Time each day this week for students to work through each learning target with me, ask questions, and get their test review turned in prior to the retake opportunity on Friday.
- Tuesday, February 18th: Learning Target #1
- Wednesday, February 19th: Learning Target #2
- Thursday, February 20th: Learning Target #3
- Friday, February 21st: Missing work emails
We will also be starting on our "Biological Evolution" unit on Monday. Below are the established due dates for this unit:- Vestigial structures (LT #1) + Check #1: Friday, February 21st
- Embryological development (LT #2) + Check #2: Friday, February 28th
- Fossil evidence (LT #3) + Check #3: Wednesday, March 5th
- Show project (choice board): Wednesday, March 12th
Social Studies:
This week in Social Studies, we will be starting our new Unit focusing on Westward Expansion! For many, I am sure this will be a breath of fresh air after our month-long unit on Early American Politics 😊 This will start with exploring topics such as Manifest Destiny, the Louisiana Purchase, and the acquisition of new states. Also, we have an exciting new project In the making! Sometime this quarter, we are hoping to host a "gallery walk" of some sort. Stay tuned for updates!
